Sunday: 9 miles recovery
Monday: 5.5 miles with PRC - 44 mins
One thing that I love is goal setting. I love to measure progress and get to something you set for yourself that is a challenge but attainable. Saturday I even spoke about goal setting at a Portland Blogger Meet Up.
One thing about goals that is wonderful is that they can be made everywhere. Every year I try to make goals in all aspects of my life - but making them for running is exciting and it easier for things to pop into my mind. I think it is because I am a numbers person and running can be very quantitative.
I feel like often the first goal people make for running is to run faster - its what everyone talks about when they talk about PRs (Personal Records) or PBs (Personal Bests). The accomplishment of a personal distance record is often overlooked.
I look back and remember the day that I ran a double digit run for the first time, or passed 17 miles for the first time. I ended up running 20 miles that day - but reaching 17.25 really sticks out as a happy moment.
Over the weekend on my Saturday morning run with Team many of the runner's training had not yet run 14 miles. It was a milestone distance - further than a half marathon and territory that many people would not have entered yet. This really made me view the run differently and made me excited for all of those people!
Sunday Mike had his personal distance record with 9 miles! Every week is more exciting as he gets deeper and deeper into marathon training!
I also had a personal best on Sunday - January become my highest mileage month ever! Sunday put me over 180 miles which I ran in April of 2012. January is not over yet - I could even reach my goal that I set a year ago of 200 miles in a month.
Even my run on Saturday - which wasn't in a race or in any extra special setting and ran half on my own - seemed like a milestone to me. It was a run that I ran harder than I thought that I was going to. The plan was to run 8'30"s then pick up the last 3 miles 15 seconds each. Instead I averaged almost flat 8s for the run - so I figured instead of picking it up since I accidentally ran too hard in the beginning that I would just try to stay consistent - then I realized that it was just a training run! Why not push myself to see what would happen and still try the pick ups - so I did - it worked out - and I will always remember it as the day that my mind began to get a little stronger.
I am becoming more confident as the weekly mileage gets higher and my runs are staying steady and consistent. I am hoping that I will keep improving as May gets closer!

What are your milestone memories?
Do you use the term Personal Record or Personal Best?
I think that's amazing Kayla! I bet you can make it to 200 this month. I need to set my blogging goals for 2013 ;)
ReplyDeleteWOW! I'm always amazed by you. BTW... great talk on Saturday. Thank you again!
ReplyDelete200!! You are totally going to rock that! Glad to hear Mike is having continued success in his running too! Excited, too, to hear how incredibly fast and consistent your long distance times are getting!!
ReplyDeleteNew reader, I love your post! I have a lot of mile stone memories. Just last week I ran 10 miles on my treadmill and I'm not even training for anything. That's a big 'running' milestone for me=)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your great runs! It sounds like your body is responding really well to the high mileage. I also really love goal setting, especially with running. I love how making a goal can really change how you look at things. Good luck trying to hit 200 miles for January! :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations sweetness! You are doing so well and I am incredibly happy for you! All your hard work and natural talent showing more and more. Personal milestones that stick out for me is everytime I run a distance faster or further. The 50 miler will always be surreal to me I think. Happy Wednesday girl. :)
ReplyDeleteHey girl!
ReplyDeletephewww, I finally tracked you down. haha! You didn't have your blog linked to your name, so I couldn't find you for a while!
Aaanyway, what a GREAT run!! you are speedy little thing!
i use the term PR personally. also, this post means a lot to me because i've never run farther than 13.1. I know when I hit 14, it'll be a BIG moment for me!
